Learning in Sudbury

At this week’s School Committee meeting, Mathematics Coordinator Maggie McGinty and Math Coaches Christine Grigsby and Kathy Lizotte presented (while literally wearing their enthusiasm for math in the form of team sweatshirts) some of the exciting work going on in Sudbury to advance coherence, rigor, differentiation, and empowerment in math. Here are just a few highlights:

photo (18)Math Journaling: One of the most important potential levers in the Common Core is the emphasis on synthesis of knowledge, problem solving, and communicating one’s thinking. At all elementary grade levels, students are using journals to explain rigorous math concepts, building concepts like equations from the youngest ages.
